The Democratic Party is like a sinking ship-We must save it now-Erias Lukwago

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago wants the DP president Norbert Mao to call an emergency meeting to address what he calls a dire situation in the party orchestrated by alleged internal disagreements. Lukwago who is a life member of the party but chose to contest as an independent in both the 20111 and 2016 mayoral elections says that there are disagreement over the vacancy of the party secretary General, appointments of party members to serve in central Government, and a recent decision to back the party vice president Fred Mukasa Mbidde as the sole candidate of the party in the East African Legislative Assembly elections
He insists that the disagreements are threatening the unity of the party and that it’s incumbent upon the party president Mao to urgently call a meeting to discuss the matter and away forward. There have been suggestions by some party members that the top organs of the party including , the NEC, National Council or the delegates conference should sit and handle the situation but Lukwago says that those organs are now incapacitated
On KCCA matters and Hon Minister Bettie Kamya
The Lord Mayor of Kampala Capital City Erias Lukwago wants the KCCA council to call the minister in charge of the city Bettie Namisango Kamya to order for allegedly usurping powers of elected leaders in Kampala in total disregard of the law
Lukwago accuses minister Kamya of imposing on herself powers to direct the management of affairs in Kampala which is a preserve of the elected leaders, issuing decrees and orders against issues being deliberated by the KCCA council, using her position to malign elected leaders in Kampala and failing to execute her responsibilities as minister
Lukwago says he has been prompted to take this stand following an incident last week were he almost clashed with minister Kamya in Iran were he had been invited to make a presentation
Lukwago tells Journalists at city hall that Betty Kamya who was in South Africa followed him to Iran were she allegedly caused a diplomatic embarrassment after purporting to be the political head of Kampala
Lukwago says that he will table all the grievances she has about minister Kamya and that the special council sitting will make the final position on the matters including proposed sanctions against. The Lord Mayor also reminds the minister in charge of Kampala Bettie Namisango Kamya about the urgent need for her to appoint the Metropolitan Physical planning Authority which is supposed to plan for the development of the city
Lukwago tells Journalists at City hall that the powers to appointment of the members of this Authority lie with the minister in charge of Kampala and that the former minister Frank Tumwebaze and now Kamya have both failed to fulfill this mandate
He says it’s important to have this authority in place to guide policies of Kampala by making all the plans as envisaged under the KCC Act. Lukwago also says that KCCA still lacks the Public Accounts Committee because minister Kamya is yet to approve those he appointed to serve on this committee. Lukwago says that without this committee, accountability related matters at KCCA remain a big challenge
